FIRE SEASON IS IN FULL SWING - ARE YOU PREPARED?
Southern Oregon is one of the most beautiful places in America. But it is up to every one of us to keep it green. This fire season, what you do matters.
A single spark can threaten homes, neighborhoods, businesses, farms, forests, and lives. By taking a few simple steps, we can help prevent wildfires and protect the communities we love.
PREVENT WILDFIRES
Always check fire restrictions before hiking, camping, or off-roading
Campfires
Keep it small and never leave it unattended. Before you leave, drown it, stir it, feel it. If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave.
Cars, Motorcycles, & ATVs
Only drive on established roads/trains and only park on developed surfaces, never on dry grass. Service your vehicle regularly to prevent overheating or sparks.
Smoking
Never discard butts on the ground or in vegetation. Extinguish completely with water or sand. Cigarette butts can smolder for hours before starting a fire.

PROTECT YOUR HOME. PROTECT YOUR NEIGHBORS.
Backyard Burning
Escaped debris burning is the #1 cause of human-caused wildfires. Burning is prohibited during fire season. Cover your pile and wait for the fall. When burning: clear a 10-foot radius, never use gasoline, stay by your pile, and make sure it's completely out.
Equipment Use
Use gas-powered equipment early in the day. Use weed trimmers with plastic lines only. Make sure tools have approved spark arresters. Keep a fire extinguisher or water hose nearby at all times.
Defensible Space
Clear combustible material within 30 feet of your home. Remove dead plants, branches, leaves, and needles. Prune tree branches to 6-10 feet high. Keep grass under four inches. Move woodpiles at least 30 feet from your home.
Fireworks
Fireworks are prohibited on Oregon beaches, parks, campgrounds, and public lands. Keep legal fireworks on pavement, away from structures, vehicles, and dry vegetation.
